Single mothers are not welfare queens, nor are we a burden to society. We are human and deserving of respect for the daily struggles we face in dealing with single parenthood. The stigma surrounding single parenthood derives from the misinformation perpetuated by the media and society at large. The truth of the matter is that while single mothers struggle, it is not because of choice. It is largely because of circumstances beyond the mom’s control that leaves her to raise her child or children alone.

My name is Katrina. I am a staff member at Day 1 Single Mothers Protection Center. I am a single mother, college educated, and I work full time. I do not fit the single mother stereotype, nor do most single mothers fit the stereotype.

After graduating from college, I went to look for ways to give back. I was largely interested in serving with a non-profit that assisted single moms because I was one and I felt blessed and fortunate to be able to give back. While searching, I stumbled across an ad for Day 1 Single Mothers Protection Center. The word protection stuck out to me.

I remember those days when I was going to school and taking care of a newborn. Those days weren’t easy, and I can only imagine how difficult it is for other single mothers who are doing even more to take care of their children and families. This is why I decided to volunteer. This is why I am a staff member for Day 1 Single Mothers  Protection Center. I care and I know what it feels like to need help. This is why our founders started Day 1 Single Mothers Protection Center: to give help and hope.
